Garden #2

Our gardening adventure continues. Before we could do much else we had to spend times leveling the ground where we pulled up all the grass. Not easy with our hard clay dirt. Then Jared and the kids built the boxes. We laid two layers of weed cloth over the dirt and put the boxes on top of that. We then added a path way and pea gravel all around the boxes to create walkways between the boxes.

The next step was to mix the soil. The theory behind square foot gardening is to have the perfect soil. The soil mixture recommended eliminates the need to fertilize, lowers the amount of water needed and the amount of weeding.

Mixing our own soil though was quite the under taking. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of this process. We had to get peat moss, vermiculite and 4 different types of compost. You put it all out on a tarp and then mix it all together.

After we got the soil in the boxes, we divided the tops of the boxes into 12 inch squares. On a side note, by the time we got to this point Jared has been very sick. He has had a diverticulitis infection for which he will have surgery on June 1st, but that is another post all together. Anyway, due to the pain he was in Jared was unable to help with this part. He sat in a camping chair directing me how to do it. I enlisted the help of the kids. Jamie was a real trooper. While the other kids came and went throughout the day Jamie stuck with me through the end.

Our next door neighbor was an awesome help too. First, he loaned us his truck to get the pea gravel and then helped us unload it around the boxes. Then he knew Jared wasn't feeling good and we were trying to get done, so when the kids got bored at our house he had them over to play at his house. They thought that was way more fun than working in the yard. Then he went and got hot dogs and brats and made us dinner. He brought it over so that I wouldn't have to make dinner. He even came and mowed our lawn since Jared wasn't able to. We are so lucky to have a good neighbor.

Wow, I'm impressed. We jsut got a garden spot ready in the last few weeks too, but I have a feeling you are going to have better success than us. I'm excited to see the final product!
